Brother of  Chief Justice Sir William Ralph Meredith, and son of the late John Cook Meredith and Sarah Pegler, he was born and educated in London, Ontario. In June, 1893 he married Elspeth Hudson Angus, daughter of  R.B. Angus of Montreal.

Acquired business experience in service at the Bank of Montreal. Joined the Montreal Stock Exchange in 1887 and was president from 1902-1905. Head of the firm Charles Meredith & Co.. stock brokers, and president of Charles Merideth & Co., bond brokers and financial agents, Montreal. Vice-President of Hillcrest Colleries Ltd., 1910; a director of the British and Colonial Press Services; a member of  the Board of Arbitration and the  Montreal Board of Trade; a director of the Quebec fish and Game Association, and the Montreal Parks and Playgrounds Association.

In his youth he was  noted athlete.
