ROLL OF HONOUR 1914
From: The Year of Jubliee, A Brief Sketch of Fifty Years Work
in the Church of St. James the Apostle, Montreal 1864-1914
by Allan Pearson Shatford, John Lovell & Sons, Montreal 1914
"When war was declared between England and Germany in August 1914, Canada immediately sprang to help the Empire. Among the first to volunteer were members of St. James the Apostle Church. There is no prouder record then that which contains the list of forty-nine members of the First Canadian Contingent from our Church. They are borne upon our hearts and prayers every day in the service of intercession. Our sympathy and love go out to their family and friends. Our eyes will eagerly follow them wherever they go, and our hearts yearn for their safe return."
"Canada is preparing to send a second contingent to the service of the Empire. As this little book goes to press we have learned the names of additional volunteers from our own church or parish. We are proud to have them on our Honor Roll. No doubt there will be further enlistments, but we are only able now to record the names of those who have been accepted up to the time of the printing of the sketch of the parish:"
Captain The Rev. Allan P. SHATFORD, Chaplain, 24th Battalion (Victoria Rifles)
