St. John's United Church was formed to meet the needs of the expanding population of the Cedar Park Heights and Lakeside Heights areas of Montreal's West Island. John Rennie High School was used as a temporary worship centre. The first service was held September 18,1960. The charter roll of 329 names was approved by Montreal Presbytery in December 1960. The inaugural service took place on January 29,1961. A building committee was formed in April 1961, and in 1963 the contract was awarded to Hewson Construction. The architects were Woods & Acres. The first service in the new building at 98 Aurora Avenue was held on October 13 and the Dedication of the Sanctuary on November 17,1963.
